Compulsory basic training or the CBT was introduced in 1990 to improve road safety, in particular with the young or inexperienced riders, since its been introduced the accident rate has fallen dramatically so it does do what it is designed to do.
How The CBT Day Works
The day starts at 08:30 with a simple eyesight test just to make sure your eyes are in good working order before you get on to a bike. You would also need a good working knowledge of the highway code and if you need to buy a copy of the highway code then you can do so from here.
The CBT is made up of 5 elements, each one has to be completed in its entirety before the next element can begin, you will also need to do a simple eyesight test just to make sure you can see sufficiently.
Is an introduction to the CBT. What you can expect from the day. Then we go on and talk about safety helmets and clothing and the different types on the market.
You will be introduced to the motorcycle, You will be shown all the controls on the machine, you will learn what they are for and how we use them. You will be taught basic safety checks you need to carry out on the bike to keep yourself safe. How to take them off the stand, how to walk with the bike and how we start and stop the engine.
The fun time, You will learn how to pull away in a straight line and stop the bike safety. Then you will build on that by learning how to slow ride the bike under full control and then adding to these the skills you’ve learnt to give you the confidence and competence to be able to ride on the road.
This is a talk about the highway code and legal requirements for you and your bike, also how we are going to deal with every other road user and keep yourself safe on your bike.
Is the road ride, The law states you must be on the road for at least 2 hours therefore you will not do less then a 2 hour road ride. We do communicate with you via radios whilst on the road so it is still training on the road, so don’t panic about the road ride.
On satisfactory completion of all your elements you will be issued a CBT certificate DL196 which validates your licence and will last two years. You can then ride on the road unaccompanied with L plates at 16 on a restricted 50cc bike and 17 on a 125cc.

What do I need to bring?
Any bike gear you already have.
Lunch. Its a long day and your concentration will lapse if you get hungry. Plenty to drink if its warm.
Strong sensible boots or shoes.
Wear at least a decent pair of jeans or workwear. Tracksuit bottoms or leggings will offer you no protection at all from the weather or the road.
A positive attitude 🙂
